Nestled in the heart of the Luberon, the Colorado Provençal is a natural gem that’s sure to amaze you during your stay in France at the Crillon le Brave hotel. This exceptional site, located in Rustrel in the Vaucluse, offers breathtaking scenery and a unique experience in Provence.
The Colorado Provençal owes its name to its spectacular geological formations and bright colored ochre, reminiscent of the American Wild West, like a postcard landscape brought back to France. Today, these former ochre quarries offer a breathtaking natural spectacle. Visitors can admire a palette of colors ranging from pale yellow to bright red. The 30-hectare site features cliffs, ravines, peaks and fairy chimneys, creating a surreal setting in the heart of the Vaucluse. The surrounding vegetation contrasts magnificently with the warm ochre tones.
Le Colorado Provençal is about an hour’s drive from the village of Crillon le Brave. To get there, head towards Apt, then follow the signs to Rustrel. If you would prefer not to drive, our concierge service can arrange transportation on request, so you can enjoy your day without worrying about parking.
For the best experience, we recommend visiting the Colorado Provençal in spring (March/April) or autumn (September/October). These months offer pleasant weather conditions while avoiding the Luberon’s summer tourist crowds. If you choose to visit the site in summer, it’s best to do so at the end of the day, to avoid the peak periods between 10am and 2pm. The colours of the ochres are particularly spectacular at sunset, offering breathtaking photo opportunities.
The Colorado Provençal has two main hiking trails, offering different levels of difficulty:
1. The Sahara circuit (2.1 km – 40 min): Ideal for a quick introduction, this trail takes you into a unique setting reminiscent of desert dunes.
2. Circuit des Belvédères (3.9 km – 1h45) : Longer and more demanding, this trail offers exceptional panoramic views over the entire site.
These marked trails allow you to explore the old ochre quarries in complete safety and admire unique geological formations such as the “cirque de Barriès” and the “cirque de Bouvène”.
In addition to hiking, the Colorado Provençal is a photographer’s paradise. The way the light falls on the ochres creates changing scenes throughout the day, offering countless opportunities for memorable photographs. Guided tours are also available to learn more about the site’s geology and history. Please ask at reception for times and availability.
The Colorado Provençal site does not have a restaurant, but shaded picnic areas are available. We suggest you bring a packed lunch, which our kitchen team will be happy to prepare on request. For those who prefer to eat in a restaurant, the surrounding villages of Roussillon, Rustrel and nearby Apt offer some typically Provencal dining options.
After a day of exploring, there’s nothing like relaxing at the Crillon le Brave hotel. Treat yourself to a relaxing massage at the Spa des Écuries to soothe tired muscles or take advantage of our swimming pool overlooking Mont Ventoux. To round off the day in style, our bistronomic restaurant, La Table du Ventoux, offers refined cuisine featuring local produce.
Finally, spend a relaxing night in one of our rooms or suites overlooking Mont Ventoux, a haven of calm and serenity in the heart of Roussillon.
The Colorado Provençal at Rustrel is without doubt one of the Luberon’s most spectacular natural treasures. Its unique landscapes, accessible hiking trails and extraordinary colours make it an unmissable destination during your stay at Crillon le Brave. Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast or simply looking for an out-of-the-ordinary experience, the Colorado Provençal offers a stunning change of scenery during your stay in France.
Allow at least half a day to explore the main trails. A whole day will allow you to take full advantage of the site and its surroundings.
The Sahara circuit is relatively easy and accessible to all. The Belvederes circuit requires a higher level of fitness. Adjust your choice according to your abilities. Strollers are not recommended, however, as the trails are mainly sandy.
Dogs are allowed on site, but must be kept on a leash, to protect the wildlife and the safety of all visitors.
Le Colorado de Rustrel – Parking is open every day from 8am to 7pm, so you can park easily (campervans accepted). You can check live information updates such as the parking lot occupancy rate on the official website.

Camping is prohibited in the heart of the site in order to preserve the natural beauty of the forest. However, you can arrive at the entry with your reservation and be the first on the trail.
