With mild temperatures and a lot of sunshine, Provence is the ideal destination for a spring getaway. We’ve put together some ideas of visits that will allow you to discover the treasures of Comtat Venaissin!
A new cultural place in Carpentras, the library-museum Inguimbertine is a unique place in France. Its history goes back to the 18th century, when Joseph-Dominique d’Inguimbert was named bishop of Carpentras. He decided to found a Hôtel-Dieu hospital as well as a library-museum open to all. Throughout the centuries, the collection of the library became richer and the premises that host it became unsuitable. In 2017, after rehabilitating the Hôtel-Dieu, the collection was transferred there. The library-museum now hosts many exhibitions and conferences all year round. The library is open from Tuesday to Friday from 12pm to 6pm, Saturday from 2pm to 6pm and Sunday from 9am to 12pm.
While you’re at it, visit the historic center of Carpentras, rich in cultural heritage. Start with the Saint Siffrein cathedral, a Gothic building built in typical Provençal white stones. Not far from it, the passage Boyer and its covered market is a mandatory stop in Carpentras. You will find clothe boutiques, a fishmonger, a market house and a tea room for gourmet breaks. Another exceptional site to visit is the synagogue. Built in 1367, it is one of the oldest in France. Guided tours are organized on weekdays, and will allow you to discover the 18th century church hall, the baths and swimming pools as well as the bakery and its ovens.
Foodies will take advantage of their provençal break to wander around the most beautiful markets of Provence. When spring comes, the stalls get filled with fresh and tasty products. Asparagus, cherries… as well as the famous strawberry of Carpentras; producers will be happy to make you taste their produce fresh from the earth! Unmissable by its authenticity, its atmosphere and its proximity, the Bédoin market takes place every Monday mornings. The market in Vaison-la-Romaine on Tuesdays and the one in Carpentras on Fridays are also very pleasant.
On April 14th, Carpentras will be hosting the Strawberry Festival. This is the opportunity for everyone to discover the different varieties that make up the name “Strawberry of Carpentras” through tastings, cooking demonstrations and workshops and cultural games. All year long, every village around Crillon le Brave celebrates a fruit or a vegetable for a day or a weekend…. The asparagus in Mormoiron, the cherry in Venasque and Mallemort-du-Comtat, the fig in Caromb… and of course the truffle in Carpentras! The truffle market runs from mid-May to the end of August for the summer truffle and from mid-November to the end of March for the winter truffle. A reference for the other markets in the region, it takes place on Friday mornings in the courtyard of the Hôtel-Dieu.
