Harvesting wine tour

06/09/2017 | Bertille SAUDRAIS

September is the harvest month for our winemaker friends! To showcase this special time of the year, why not pay a visit to some of the best and most famous wine domains of the Ventoux appellation? Here is a suggested tour that will take you to 5 of these domains.

Sébastien Vincenti from the Domaine de Fondrèche will be happy to welcome you in Mazan. Leading domain of the appellation, they are most famous for their clear rosé wines. Their production is organic, although they have decided to stop being certified for more freedom in their working process. Their work focusses on preserving the vines, without the use of chemicals. In search of terroir promotion, they study the moon cycles in their production. Benoit recommends the white wines from the Domaine and Persia ranges as well as their rosé wines.

Also located in Mazan, les Terrasses d’Eole is a family-owned business created in 1998 by the Saurel family. Most of the vineyards are located on the slopes of the hill called “Le Limon”, one of the first foothills of the southern slope of famous Mont Ventoux. Discrete winemakers of the AOC Ventoux appellation, they nevertheless produce one of the best quality-price wines of the appellation. Each wine bears the name of a wind. Our sommelier Benoit Liébus recommends the wines from the Cuvée Mistrau for the red and Biso for the white.

Moving south to Mormoiron, we suggest you meet the Chaudière family from Château Pesquié. A pioneer of the AOC Côtes du Ventoux appellation, and long term partner of Crillon le Brave, it is the first domain to have bottled at the property. It is also one of the leading domains of the appellation. The name Château Pesquié comes from the provençal word “pesquié” that alludes to the lexical field of the water. Indeed, the castle is build at the crossroad of two water springs. Benoit recommends tasting the wines Quintessence in red and white.

In Mormoiron, you will also find the Domaine du Tix, a 10-hectars domain, belonging to André Tremblay. They adopt a rational agriculture process and use traditional manual methods from beginning to end to obtain premium quality wines. Their vines are exposed north, giving the wine a lot of freshness. Today, the domain wants to convert and become certified organic. Benoit recommends the vins de pays du Vaucluse Viognier as well as the cuvee Bramefan for the red.

Last but not least, Château Valcombe, in Saint Pierre de Vassols. Belonging to the Ricome family, this 36-hectar domain is located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. Respectful of the nature, they produce Ecocert- certified organic wines. The views from the domain are spectacular and our sommelier highly recommends the Epicure wines that have an excellent quality-price ratio.
